I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten to 12th grade. If there is one teacher who helped me open up to Spirit in a powerful way, it was Mr. Downes.
I was lucky enough to have Mr. Downes as my religion teacher during my Sophomore and Junior years. He was a person of strong faith. He once shared that he had meditated on the name Jesus, turning it into a mantra. He went so deep with it, he began to speak in tongues. He never demonstrated it or tried to imitate what it sounded like out of respect for the gift.
One day, he handed each of us an 8.5 x 14 inch legal size page full of Bible verses that talked about trusting in God. I was moving through some difficult moments at that time and was ao grateful to have that resource.
Mr. Downes was the first person to ever point out that each of us is made in the Divine image of God. He also helped me learn to talk to Spirit, instead of reciting rote prayers.
I'm not a practicing Catholic anymore, but I will always be grateful for Mr. Downes. He helped get my relationship to Spirit online, in real time....out of the textbook and into the heart.
